The other day an American journalist friend invited me to his home.
先日、 アメリカ人で、ジャーナリストの友人の家に招かれた。
He has a son in the 6th grade of elementary school.
友人には小学六年生の息子がいる。
I asked him "What do you want to be when you grow up?"
私が「大きくなったら、何に なりたいの？」と聞くと、
He replied, "I want to be the American president and knock down terrorists."
「アメリカの大統領になって、テロリストをやっつけたい」と答えた。
I was surprised to hear such an unexpected answer.
私は予期せぬ答えに驚 いた。
As his son left, my friend made a strange remark about him, "I would be happy if he could be the president, but it would be difficult for him.
子供が立ち去ると、友人は「大統領になれたら嬉しいですが 、まあ、あの子には無理ですね。
He is straight and can't tell lies." I said.
素直で嘘をつけないから」と妙なことを口にした。
"In Japan, the story of George Washington, the first American President, is very famous.
「日本では初代アメリカ大統領のワ シントンの話が有名ですよ。
When he was a child he damaged a cherry blossom tree that his father was carefully caring for.
彼が子供のとき、父親が大事にしていた桜の木を折ってしまったが、
He told the truth and apologized to his father, who praised his honesty."
そのことを正直に父親 に話して謝ると、父親は彼の正直さをほめたという話です」と、私が言うと、
"I have never heard such a story," my friend said in disbelief.
「そんな話、聞いたことがありませんね」 と、彼は信用しなかった。
"It is probably a fake story to emphasize the dignity of the president."
「大統領の品格を誇張するための作り話でしょう」。
"Nicus, President Bush started the war against Iraq by saying the country was hiding WMD.
「ニカスさん、ブッシュ大統領はイラクに大量破壊兵器があると言って戦争を始めました。
