How the Japanese Media Calmly Reported on the Great Disaster!

In March, Japan suffered its largest earthquake ever, followed by an unimaginably immense tsunami which then caused several nuclear power plants to explode and leak radiation.

Most of the foreign media sensationally reported on the Tohoku region’s complete devastation and the risks at the Fukushima nuclear power plant as if all of Japan was at peril.

For instance, some media outlets described the efforts to cool off the power plant's reactors as “the last defense” and how “brave workers were on a suicide mission,” even going as far as describing the events as an “apocalypse.”

Few media bothered reporting that in Tokyo and western Japan, the situation was much calmer.

Additionally, the American government instructed its citizens in Japan to move at least 80 kilometers away from the damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant.

This resulted in the increasing anxiety of foreign residents, further creating confusion on whether or not to return to their home countries.

Under such circumstances, the Japanese continue to endure the ordeal, maintaining public order while further coming to each other’s aid.

For this, many overseas media outlets are reporting on the admiration their citizens have for Japan’s overall calm behavior.

This Japanese crisis-behavior can be greatly attributed to people’s general nature.

The Japanese media reported calmly, while the experts did not make overblown statements further fueling people’s existing fears.

Recently in Japan, politicians have lost citizens’ trust resulting in the almost yearly change of the Prime Minister.

However, while there are many nations whose citizens doubt their own government’s truthfulness, Japanese citizens count on their government in times of national disaster.

This can also be construed as proof of how unified the country can be in an emergency.

Sixty-six years ago, Japan was defeated in the Pacific War and lost practically everything.

However, Japanese citizens worked hard, miraculously restoring their country, which eventually became a leading, global, economic power.
