Next to the Hotel Alpha on Kawaramachi-dori in Kyoto, Fenway Park was established in 2005 by two enterprising brothers named Yasuyuki (Tiger) and Tetsuya (Dragon) Ohta.
2005年、大田 “TIGER”恭之と大田“DRAGON”哲也の起業家兄弟により、京都の河原町にあるホテルアルファの隣にフェンウェイパークがつくられた。
Surprisingly, the bar was opened before the Red Sox acquired Japanese stars Matsuzaki Daisuke and Okajima Hideki, a deal which made Japanese fans more familiar with Boston, the long-time rival of the much more famous New York Yankees.

In fact, Tiger has been a die-hard Red Sox fan for more than a decade.

So, what is it that inspired Tiger and Dragon to dedicate their bar to the Red Sox and name it after one of the most historic stadiums in the United States?

For starters, the Boston-Kyoto connection is actually a logical one, considering that they are sister cities.

Furthermore, there are obvious connections between the Red Sox and Japan’s Hanshin Tigers (although the Tigers’ home stadium is in Nishinomiya, Hyogo, they really are Kansai’s team).

When I asked him about the legal issue of using this name for his bar, Tiger proudly produced a letter from Larry Lucchino, CEO of the Red Sox, thanking him for being a part of Red Sox Nation!
この名前をバーにつけるにあたり法律問題について聞いたとき、TIGERはレッドソックスのCEO、ラリー・ルキチーノからの手紙を誇らしげに見 せた。そこには彼がレッドソックスの一員であることへの感謝が書かれている。
One notable customer was none other than Okajima Hideki, the Japanese relief pitcher who became a big star in Boston after a great first year with the Red Sox last year.
有名なお客の一 人は、他でもない岡島秀樹だ。彼は日本人のリリーフピッチャーで、昨年一年間レッドソックスでよい成績を出した後、ボストンではビッグスターになった。
The Kyoto native stopped in the bar last New Year’s while on holiday back in Japan to see Tiger and Dragon and wish them well.

Considering all the good baseball has done to bridge the gap between Japanese and Americans, Fenway Park is a refreshing addition to Japan’s bar scene.
野 球は日本人とアメリカ人の架け橋となったきたが、フェンウェイパークは日本のバーに新鮮さを加えた。
So, baseball fan or not, it’s a great place to pop in on your next visit to Kyoto.
