A Little Mystery in a City 都会の小さなミステリー

Soon after I came to Japan, 

日本に来て間もないころ、

I arranged to meet my Japanese friend at a coffee shop near a large train station.

日本人の友達と大きな駅近くの喫茶店で待ち合わせをした。

I saw a young girl distributing plastic-wrapped packs to people walking by in front of the station.

駅前で若い女性が小さなビニールパックを通行人に配っているのを 目にした。

I was curious as to what was inside them.                      

私は中に何が入ているのか、興味を持った。

As I wanted to get one, 

私はそのパックをもらおうと

I walked slowly toward the girl, 

その女性の前をゆっくりと進んだが、

but she looked away and ignored me.

彼女は横を向き私を無視した。

Looking back at her, 

振り返って彼女を見ると、

I saw her continuing to distribute the pack with a smile to a passerby who came by after me.

私の後からきた通行人には笑顔で差し出していた。

But he didn’t take it and ignored her instead.

しかし、その通行人は逆に彼女を無視したように、それを 受け取らなかった。

After taking a closer look, 

よく観察すると、

I found there were some who took the pack, 

受け取る人と

and others who didn’t.                                                          

受け取らない人がいる。

As I walked on wondering about it, 

不思議に思いながら前へ歩いていくと、

another girl who was distributing plastic-wrapped packs came into view.

例のビニールパックを通行人に配っている別の女性がまた目に入った。

I took more and more interest in the situation 

ますます興味を抱いた

and walked by the girl, 

私はその女性の近くを通ったが、

but she didn’t offer a pack to me.

彼女も私にはくれようとしなかった。

I was offended by this.                                                

私はむっとした。

She gave it to Japanese but not to me.                    

 日本人にはあげているの に私にはくれない。

I wondered whether it was because I am a foreigner.           

 私が外国人だからなのか。

If so, I must be being discriminated against.                         

だとしたら人種差別ではないか。

When I met my friend at the coffee shop, I told her about it .

喫茶店で友達に会いそのことを話すと、

She said that the girl was distributing packs of tissue paper.

女性が配っていたのはティッシュペー パーだと言った。

She also told me that an advert was either printed on the pack 

 そのパックに広告が印刷されているか、

or inserted inside it.

中に広告が入っているのだという。

The reason I was not offered a pack by the girls 

私にくれなかったのは、

was because the company sponsoring the advert was not promoting itself to foreigners.

外国人に宣伝しても意味がないからだったのだ。

Now I understand.                                                             

私はようやく納得できた。

Some days later, when I had a cold, 

後日、私がかぜを引いたとき、

I happened to see someone distributing packs of tissue paper.

丁度、ティッシュペーパーを配っていた。

Since I inevitably wanted one, 

どうしても欲しかったので

I stretched out my hand.

手を差し出すと、

Then, she gave it to me with a smile.                     

彼 女はにっこりしながらくれた。

What a nice country!                                     

何ていい国なんだろう！
