Blind ‘Robin Hood’ Confronts Villains

悪党どもに立ち向かう盲目の侠客

座頭市（北野武監督）

Zatoichi is a samurai action movie with Takeshi Kitano both directing and playing the main character, Ichi.
北野武が監督し、主人公の市を演じたアクション時代劇映画。

The movie is highly reputed thanks to Kitano’s unique direction that includes the use of rhythmical music in some scenes.
劇中にリズミカルな音楽を取り入れるなど、北野の斬新な演出で評判となった。

Ichi appears to be just a blind masseur who travels the country, 
座頭市は、諸国を旅する盲目のあんまという設定だが、

but he is also a master of swordplay 
実は剣の達人で、
and stands against villains with his secret sword hidden in his cane.
杖に仕込んだ刀で悪党どもに立ち向かう。

The movie starts with Ichi coming into an inn town, 
ある宿場町に市がやってくる場面から始まる。
where the Ginzo yakuza family rules with a rich merchant.
そこはやくざの銀蔵一家が金持ち商人と組んで仕切っていた。

In the town, a masterless samurai called Hattori 
そこに腕の立つ浪人、服部が

who wants to be a bodyguard for the yakuza family appears.
現れ、銀蔵一家の用心 棒に志願する。

In another scene, beautiful traveling geisha sisters 
また、美しい旅芸者姉妹が
kill a man in a rest house. 
休憩所で男を殺害する。

The story unfolds with these three parties shown in the beginning.
冒頭に出てくるこの三組を中心にストーリーは展開していく。

Hattori later meets Ichi at a bar 
酒場で市に出会った服部は
and discovers Ichi is not merely a masseur, 
市がただのあんまではないことを見抜く。
and Ichi finds him to be a killer.
また、市も服部を危険な人物と感じる。

After a while Ichi encounters the sisters on a night when he wins money at a gambling house.
しばらくして、市は賭博で儲けた夜に姉妹と出会 う。

He is told that the sisters’ parents were killed by a gang when they were children 
そして、二人が幼い頃に親をやくざの一味に殺され、
and they became traveling geisha to find the gang and get revenge.
その仇を討つために旅芸者になったことを知る。

The man who the sisters killed at the rest house was one of them.
休憩所で殺した男はその一人だった。

The Ginzo family beats their rivals 
銀蔵一家は敵対する一派をつぶし、
and expands their domain.
勢力を拡大していく。

One day when the sisters find out that the Ginzo family is their enemy, 
やがて、姉妹の敵が銀蔵一家と判明すると、
they approach the family 
二人は彼らに近づき、
and get a chance to entertain them as geisha.
芸者として一家に入り込む機会を得 た。

But their background is disclosed 
だが、身元を見破られて
and they are in imminent danger.
しまい危機が迫る。

At that moment, Ichi appears 
そこに市が現れ、
and kills most of the gang.
そこにいた一味をみな殺しにしてしまう。

At last Ichi confronts Hattori. 
そして、最後に服部と対決するが、

The fight ends in a moment. Ichi’s skill prevails.
市の腕が上回り、勝負は一瞬のうちに決まった。

From the beginning, the gang’s real boss does not appear on the screen. The audience only hears his voice.
この間、銀蔵一家の黒幕は声だけで画面には登場しない。


Ichi finally uncovers who he is 
 市が最期に突き止める。
and the boss’ identity is unexpected.
 黒幕は、意外な人物だった。

Before killing the man 
切りつける前に、
Ichi opens his eyes wide.
市は目を大きく見開く。

It leaves the audience wondering whether Ichi can actually see or not.
本当は 目が見えるのではないか、やはり見えないのか、観客に謎を残す。

In the final scene, 
ラストシーンでは
farmers of the village do a tap dance.
多数の農民が一斉にタップを踏む。

It is a unique moment in cinema.
ユニークな場面だ。

Zatoichi received the best director award at the 60th Venice Film Festival.
第60回ベネチア国際映画祭で「監督賞」を受賞。

Kitano Takeshi also 
北野武はまた、
received the “Venice Gold Lion” award for “Hana-bi” in 1997.
1997年に「HANA-BI」で「金獅子賞」を受賞した。

Internationally he is known as a film director, 
国際的には映画監督として有名だが、
but in Japan 
国内では
he is more famous as the comedian Beat Takeshi.
