In 1927, Austrian Fritz Lang’s silent masterpiece Metropolis 
amazed audiences 
1927年、フリッツ・ラング監督（オーストリア出身）のサイレント映画「メトロポリス」が観客を驚かせた。
with its ahead-of-its-time imagery of a distant future where utopia and class warfare clash.

ユートピアと階級闘争という矛盾が存在する遠い未来を映した、時代の先を行く映像だった。

Teuka Osamu’s 1949 manga version of the story, also named “Metropolis,” 
 手塚治虫による1949年の漫画作品も同じく「メトロポリス」というタイトルで、
was adapted as a full length animated feature in 2001, 
2001年には長編アニメ映画になった。
directed by Rintaro, a former colleague of Tezuka’s, 
監督は手塚と一緒に仕事をしてい た、りんたろう、 
with a screenplay by Otomo Katsuhiro, Akira’s producer.
脚本は「AKIRA」の作者、大友克洋だ。

While Tezuka’s manga had only a thread of a connection to Lang’s work, 
 手塚の漫画はラング作品とはほんの少ししかつながりがない。
Otomo’s script is a little more faithful to the manga it’s interpreting, 
一方、大友の脚本はその漫画に、よ り忠実ではあるものの、
but still only loosely based on the original story.
それでもまだ大まかにオリジナル・ストーリーに基づいている。

The plot shows us the city of Metropolis, 
舞台は都市国家メトロポリス。
led by the industrialist Duke Red, 
実権を握っているのは実業家のレッド公だ。
a tall, imposing figure with a cockatoo hair style and nose akin to a bird’s beak.
背が高くオウムのような髪形に鳥のくちばしに似た鼻という印象的な風貌をしている。

His newly constructed skyscraper, the Ziggurat, 
新しく建設させた超高層ビル、ジグラットで 
promises to advance mankind’s dominance, 
人類による支配を発展させると約束しているが、
but ulterior motives lurk behind his intentions.
彼には隠された本当の目的があった。

The city’s labor is handled, in most part, by robots of various designs, 
 市内の労働のほとんどが 様々なロボットに任されている。
some with artificial intelligence.
中には人工知能を持ったロボットもいる。

Duke Red acts as an adoptive father to the antagonistic Rock, leader of an anti-robot group.
レッド公は、彼と対立する反ロボット・グループのリーダー、ロックの養父である。

Private Detective Ban Shunsaku and his nephew Kenichi 
私立探偵の伴俊作と甥のケンイチは
are in Metropolis to arrest a Dr. Laughton, 
ロートン博士を捕まえようとメトロポリスに来ている。
wanted for illegal human organ trafficking, 
博士は違法な臓器売買で指名手配中の男だが、 
but whose clandestine work also involves creating an android copy of Duke Red’s deceased daughter Tima.
レッド公の死んだ娘 ティマそっくりのロボットを作り出すことも彼の不法な仕事の一つだった。

When Rock, Shunsaku and Kenichi inadvertently meet up at Laughton’s lab, 
ロックと俊作、ケンイチがロートン博士の研究室で偶然に遭遇してしまったことから
chaos ensues.
 大混乱が起こる。

A furious Rock kills the doctor and destroys the lab.
怒り狂ったロックは博士を殺して研究室を破壊する。

Kenichi and an accidentally awakened Tima 
ケンイチと、はからずも目を覚ましたティマは、
are separated from everyone, 
他の人たちと離ればなれになり、
lost in the bowels of the enormous city.
巨大都市の深部へと姿を消す。

The two gradually form a bond as Kenichi teaches Tima, whose mind is a blank slate and ignorant of her artificial nature, about language and society. 　
ティマには全く記憶がなく、自分が人工的に作られたことも知らない。ケンイチがティマに言葉や社会のことを教えていくうちに、２人の間には絆が生ま れてくる。

Meanwhile, Atlas, a revolutionary representing the displaced labor force of Metropolis, 
一方、メトロポリスで仕事にあぶれた労働者を率いる革命家アトラスは、
stirs up a rebellion against the society that let robots take their jobs, 
ロボットが人間の仕事を奪うような社会に対して暴動を煽動する。
Duke Red stages a coup against the President of Metropolis, 
レッド公はメトロポ リスの大統領に対するクーデターを成功させ、
and Rock chases Tima in hopes of destroying her.
ロックはティマを破壊しようと追いかける。

As it turns out, Tima is the key to the operations of the Ziggurat, 
実はティマはジグラットのオペレーションのカギであり、
and when all parties finally meet in the epic finale, 
大詰めで、 全てのグループが一堂に会した時に、 
Tima must confront her true self 
ティマは自分の本当の姿と向き合わねばならなくなり、 
and Kenichi must try to save her from Duke’s nefarious plan and Rock’s rampage.
ケンイチはレッド公の極悪な計画やロックの凶暴な行動から彼女を救おうとする。
