Recently you often see young women wearing false eyelashes.

最近は、つけまつ毛をする若い女性をよく見かけます。

They also use mascara to make their eyes look bigger.

彼女たちは、さらに目を大きく見せるためにマスカラを使います。

These women look just like anime characters.

まるでアニメのキきャラクターのようになります。

At a recent event I had the opportunity to talk with some women wearing false eyelashes.

最近あるイベントで、私はつけまつ毛をした女性たちと話す機会がありました。

There I also bumped into Lisa, an American acquaintance of mine, who is a student in Japan.

そこで私の知り合いのアメリカ人留学生のリサにも会いました。

Lisa has a modest appearance and doesn’t use make up.

リサは地味な容姿で化粧をしません。

I said to her playfully, “Why don’t you wear false eyelashes? I’m sure you would look prettier.”

私はからかうように「リサもつけまつ毛をしたらどう？もっときれいになると思うよ」と言いました。

The women wearing false eyelashes around her jokingly egged her on by saying, “Lisa-san, do you want to give it a go? We will help you with your make up!”

周りにいたつけまつ毛の女性たちは、面白半分に「リサさん、試しにやってみたら？私たちが化粧を手伝ってあげる！」と言って、

はやしたてました。

Lisa was embarrassed, but she was persuaded by the women and went to the restroom with them.

リサは戸惑っていましたが、女性たちに説得され、一緒に化粧室に行きました。

Ten minutes later, Lisa returned.

10分後にリサは戻ってきました。

I was surprised by the change. Her eyes looked so big and strange.

その変わりぶりに驚きました。彼女の目がとても大きく、おかしく見えたのです。

Even so, so as not to hurt her feelings, the women did not say what they really thought.

それでも、女性たちは彼女を傷つけない ため に、本当の気持ちを伝えませんでした。

Instead, they yelped, “You are so cute!”

She seemed satisfied with their reaction.

Some time later I met up with Lisa again.

She was wearing false eyelashes, but looked depressed.

彼女はつけまつ毛をしていましたが、元気がありません。

When I asked the reason, she said, “After that event, I was hunting for a job, but I failed all my interviews.”

理由を尋ねると、「あの後に、就職活動をしましたが、面接で全部落ちてしまったのです」と言いました。

I asked, “You didn’t go to the interviews looking like that did you?”

私は、「まさか、その化粧で面接に行ったんじゃないよね？」と聞きました。

She said, “Of course, I did. Everyone said I looked cute with them on.”

彼女は、「もちろん行きましたよ。みんなこの方がかわいいって言ったから」と答えました。

When I explained that conservative clothing and light make up are favored in Japanese company interviews, she looked puzzled.

私が、日本の会社の面接では地味な服装と薄化粧が歓迎されると説明すると、リサは困惑しました。

The Japanese custom of not expressing one’s true opinion for fear of hurting people’s feelings had hurt her.

人の心を傷つけることを恐れて本当のことを言わない日本の慣習が彼女を傷つけたのです。

I was so sorry for her, but still I could not tell Lisa that the false eyelashes did not suit her.

私は彼女にとてもすまないと思いましたが、それでも、つけまつ毛は似合わないよとリサ には言えませんでした。
