Fukubukuro is a Good Value for the Money but ... 福袋はお得ですが……

One of the fun things about New Year in Japan are fukubukuro.

正月の楽しみの一つは福袋です。

They are bags containing many sought after items, sealed in such a way that customers can’t see their contents.

福袋とは、お得な商品が いくつも入って いる袋のことで、お客に中身が わからないように閉じられて います。

The price varies, but many are sold for 5,000 yen or 10,000 yen.

値段はさまざまですが、多くが5千円、1万円で売られています。

Fukubukuro sold at department stores are so popular that people form a long line to buy them.

デパートで売られる福袋は、長い行列ができる ほどの人気です。

Last year, my wife said, “I heard that Mrs. A’s friend bought a 10,000 yen fukubukuro at M department store and it contained a 30,000 yen

brand watch which I badly wanted.

昨年、妻が言いました。「Aさんの友達がMデパートで1万円の福袋を買ったら、私がすごく欲しかった3万円のブランドの腕時計が

入って いたんですって。

This year I will definitely go and buy one.”

今年は私も絶対に買うわ」と。

Then, she went to M department store to buy a fukubukuro.

そして、妻は福袋を買いにMデパートへ行きました。

Returning home, my wife promptly opened the fukubukuro she had bought for 10,000 yen.

家に戻った妻は、1万円で買った福袋をさっそく開けました。

There were some goods including a cardigan, scarf and socks inside.

中には、カーディガン、スカーフ、靴下などの商品が入っていました。

Though it didn’t contain a brand watch or something of similar value, the products seemed to be worth more than 10,000 yen.

ブランドの時計などの高額品は入っていませんでしたが、1万円以上の価値はありそうです。

 

My wife murmured, “It didn’t contain what I really wanted, but was a good value for the money.” She looked satisfied.

妻はつぶやきました。「私が本当に欲しいものはなかったけど、損はしなかったわ」と、満足しているようでした。

One day I had an opportunity to talk with an acquaintance who works at a department store.

あるとき、デパートで働く知り合いと話す機会がありました。

I asked him, “People who buy fukubukuro seem to be content. Do you provide this service as a way to promote your store?”

私は、「福袋を買った人は、得した気持ちになるようですが、店を宣伝するためのサービスですか」と聞きました。

Grinning at me, he said, “This is a business, so we don’t make a loss.”

彼はにやりとして、「これは商売ですので、損はしていませんよ」と言いました。

He didn’t say it explicitly, but it seemed to me that they use up their leftover goods.

はっきりしたことは言いませんでした が、どうやら売れ残った商品を使っているようでした。

As for the fukubukuro that contain a luxury item, he had this to say.

高級品が入っている福袋については、こう言いました。

“Those who get their hands on a fukubukuro containing a luxury item are so happy that they talk about it to many of their friends.

「高級ブランド品が入った福袋を手に入れた人は、うれしくてたくさんの友達に話してくれるんです。

It’s great publicity.”

いい宣伝になるんです よ」。

 

In December my wife said, “This coming New Year’s day I will buy a fukubukuro again.

12月、妻は言いました。「今度のお正月にも福袋を買うわ。

I have a feeling that this time it will contain a luxury item.

今回は高級品が入っていそうな気がするの。

Even if it does not, it’s still worth buying.”

入っていなくても損はしないんだから」と。

However, I have never seen my wife wearing the cardigan and scarf that were contained in last year’s fukubukuro.

しかし、昨年の福袋に入っていたカーディガンやスカーフを身に着けている妻を見たことがありません。

It seems that the dead stock of the department store will be transferred to our closet again.

デパートの在庫品が我が家のクローゼットにまた移ってきそうです。
