Reaching Adulthood at 20 in Japan 日本の成人は20歳

The second Monday of January is Coming of Age Day; a national holiday in Japan.

日本では、1月の第二月曜日が「成人の日」で祝日です。

Municipalities hold a ceremony to celebrate those who’ve come of age and 20-year-olds attend the ceremony in their best clothing.

市町村は成人を祝う式典を行い、二十歳の若者は晴れ姿で参加します。

On the other hand every year some new adults get carried away either at or after the ceremony and cause trouble.

一方では、毎年一部の新しい成人が式典で、あるいは終わった後に調子に乗りトラブルを起こしています。

Those who’ve come of age have the right to vote.

成人には、選挙権が与えられます。

They can also drink alcohol and smoke.

また、お酒を飲むことができ、たばこが吸えます。

However, if they get involved in any trouble their name and photo are released to the media.

しかし、事件を起こすと名前や写真がメディアで報道されてしまいます。

Underage youths are able to obtain driving licenses and to get married.

運転免許証の取得や結婚は未成年でも可能です。

Furthermore lowering the voting age to 18 years old is being discussed.

また、選挙権年齢を18歳に引き下げる議論が行われています。
