Singer Who Sang a Song  Symbolizing Postwar Japan
As is often referred to in the saying, “Popular songs change with the times and the times change with popular songs,” songs represent the mood of the times.

In August 1945, Japan admitted defeat in the Second World War.

A few months later, the theme song of the movie “Soyokaze” was broadcast on the radio all over Japan.

This song was “Ringo no Uta” (The Apple’s Song) sung by Michiko Namiki.

The song’s lyrics began with the words “Kissing a red apple, I see the blue sky without saying a word.”

The song, with its lyrics written by poet Hachiro Sato, became a huge hit.

It became a song symbolic of the post war period during which the nation struggled to rebuild itself.

The lyrics continue, “The apple doesn’t say anything, but I fully understand the state of apple’s mind.”
At that time Japan was in ruins, Japanese had little food and had to endure hardship;

this song captured the hearts of the Japanese.

In addition, it also became a song of hope.

Namiki was born in Asakusa, Tokyo.

As a girl she loved music and entered Shochiku Girls’ Theater Company.

She debuted at the Kokusai Theater and later she was chosen to play the lead role in the movie “Soyokaze.”

She was open-minded and cheerful.

Tadashi Manjoume, the composer of the song, instructed her to sing the song cheerfully.
However, at first it took some time until Namiki could sing the song cheerfully.

She had a reason.

On March 10 in that year, American forces carried out a big air raid in Tokyo in which more than 100,000 people died.

At that time she lost her mother and almost died herself.

On top of that, she had lost her father and brother in the war.

Actually, besides Namiki’s solo there is another version of Ringo no Uta.

It is her duet with a famous singer Noboru Kirishima who had made a lot of hit songs.

He believed Ringo no Uta could be a big hit and asked permission to duet with Namiki.

However, Kirishima did not sing the song on stage or TV, and only a few people know the duet version.

Namiki has performed more than 50 songs.

But since her solo Ringo no Uta became too famous, her other songs paled in comparison.

Nine years after Ringo no Uta, “Ganpeki no Haha” (Mother on the Pier) sung by Akiko Kikuchi became a  big hit.

It is a song based on the real life story of a mother who stood on a pier everyday waiting for her son to return from the war.

Many songs reflecting a variety of periods captured the hearts of the Japanese providing the backdrop for the restoration of Japan.

Namiki’s Ringo no Uta was the first song of its kind.
