A Japan-Turkey Friendship Forged through a Shipwreck 船の遭難から生まれた日本とトルコの友情

On September 16, 1890, following a friendly visit to Japan, the Turkish warship “Ertugrul (Ottoman Frigate)” was on its way home when it encountered a typhoon off the coast of Wakayama Prefecture and sank,  killing 587 crew members.

1890年9月16日、修好のために日本を訪れたトルコの軍艦「エルトゥールル号」が、帰国途中に和歌山県沖で台風にあい沈没し、 乗組員587名が亡くなりました。

One survivor, who managed to swim ashore on Ooshima Island during the evening the typhoon raged, managed to climb the island’s cliff top lighthouse.

台風が荒れ狂うその夜、大島の海岸に泳ぎ着いた生存者の一人が島の崖の上にある灯台にたどり着きました。

There, he tried to explain the situation to the lighthouse keeper, but was completely unable to communicate with him.

そこで彼は灯台守に事情を話しますが、言葉が全く通じません。

Because the sailor persevered using international signals and physical gestures, the keeper finally understood that a big accident had

occurred.

万国共通信号とジェスチャーを使い辛抱強く説明すると、ようやく灯台守は大きな事故が起きたことを理解します。

He then ran down the dark lighthouse path to inform the villagers, and about 50 families went out to search for the survivors.

灯台守はすぐに村民に知らせるために、暗い夜道を駆け下りました。およそ50軒の村民が生存者を探しに向かいました。

There was much debris scattered about as many corpses started to float ashore.

海岸にはたくさんの死体が流れ着きはじめ、がれきが散らばっていました。

Among them were some survivors whose bodies were cold and in a critical condition.

その中に、体が冷えて危険な状態の生存者もいました。

The men of the village undressed and warmed the survivors with their own body heat.

村の男たちは裸になり、生存者を体温であたためました。

The poor villagers did not have enough food, so they cooked the chickens that they had raised in case of a food shortage.

貧しい村民には食料があまりありませんでした。そこで食料不足の場合に備えて育てた鶏を料理し、出しました。

The villagers’ warm kindness saved 69 sailors.

村民の献身的な介抱で69名を救いました。

The Japanese government then safely returned the recovered crews to Turkey aboard two Japanese warships.

そして、日本政府は二隻の日本の軍艦で元気になった乗組員をトルコに送り届けました。

In 1891, a memorial was built on Ooshima Island as a symbol of friendship between the two countries.

1891年、両国の友好のシンボルとして慰霊碑が大島に建てられました。

To this day, a memorial service still takes place every five years.

そして今日でも慰霊祭が5年ごとに行われています。

And the story continues.

この話には続きがあります。

In 1985, during the Iran-Iraq War, suddenly Iraq boldly declared that “in 48 hours, we will shoot down all aircrafts that fly over Iran.”

1985年、イラン・イラク戦争のときイラクは突然、「48時間後から、イランの上空を飛ぶすべての飛行機を撃ち落とす」というとんでもない 宣言をしました。

The nations involved sent planes to Iran to evacuate their own citizens.

どの国も飛行機をイランに送り、自国民を脱出させ ました。

However Japan, which was unable to do so at that time, effectively stranding Japanese people at Teheran airport.

しかし、日本はそのとき飛行機を送れず、日本人はテヘラン空港に取り残され ました。

In response to their plight, the Turkish government sent two planes to Teheran to help 215 Japanese people escape.

その緊急時に、トルコ政府は2機のトルコ機をテヘランに送り、215人の日本人を救出したのです。

In 2006, the Japanese government awarded medals to the Turkish rescue team.

2006年、日本政府はそのトルコ救助隊に勲章を授与しました。

The former Turkish ambassador to Japan Utkan Necati said, “I also learned about the Ertugrul incident in elementary school.

当時の駐日トルコ大使、ネジアティ・ウトカン氏はこう語りました。「エルトゥールル号の事故について私も小学生のときに学びました。

 And still today, the Turkish people have not forgotten about the self-sacrificing actions of those Japanese people.”

また、今もトルコの人たちはあのときの日本人の献身的な救助活動を忘れていません」。
