It was April 5th, 1958, at Korakuen Stadium (present Tokyo Dome), Tokyo, where the opening game of the professional baseball season was being played amidst great excitement.

On this day, the Yomiuri Giants’ golden rookie Nagashima Shigeo, who broke the Tokyo Big6 university baseball home run record, made his debut.

It was the Kokutets (present-day Tokyo Yakult) Swallows ace pitcher Kaneda Masaichi who stood before him.

Kaneda, who later achieved the Japan league record for most victories with 400, showed strong fighting spirit while up against the popular Nagashima.

Nagashima stood in the batter’s box four times that game, which all ended in strikeouts.

However, when his cap fell off after his massive swings, the stadium crowd got so excited that a legend was soon born.

Soon after that, his talent started to shine winning him rookie of the year, and both home run and RBI (runs batted in) titles.

Nagashima was not only a good hitter, but an excellent fielder and he could steal bases too.

Both his number 3 uniform and his third base position were coveted by young boys.

Nagashima, along with Oh Sadaharu who joined the team the following year, became the heros who led the Giants to their unsurpassed record of nine consecutive Japan championships.

Oh, who holds the all-time world home run record with 868, was later referred to as the “Man of Records,” while Nagashima was the “Man of Memory.”

He especially showed his talent during big games, which strongly impressed many baseball fans.

When the Japanese Emperor attended a baseball game for the first time, Nagashima hit a game winning home run.

It is said that sports papers printed 20% more copies to sell on days that followed games in which Nagashima played well.

And because he was so popular, the media rarely criticized him for fear of losing sales.

Therefore, some even say that Nagashima was a media-created superstar.

Nagashima won the batting title six times, the RBI title five times, the home run title twice and he was the league’s MVP (most valuable player) five times.

He was called a “genius player,” but people close to him say that behind the scenes he trained so well that no one could compare to him.

After retiring Nagashima admitted that “I am not a genius. I have only acted as “Nagashima Shigeo,” just like the fans expected.

On October 14, 1974, after playing his last game Nagashima announced his retirement, and left his millions of fans with his now famous farewell message:

I retire today, but our Giants live forever!”

Nagashima Shigeo, a.k.a. “Mr. Giants” or “Mr. Baseball,” who was the most popular player ever in the history of Japanese professional baseball, then faded from the spotlight.
