Kobutori Jiisan こぶとりじいさん

Once upon a time, there was an old man who had a big lump on his cheek.

 むかしむかし、ほっぺに大きなこぶのあるおじいさんが住んでいました。

One day the old man fell asleep in the forest, while waiting for the rain to stop.

 ある日、おじいさんは森の中で雨宿りをしているうちに眠ってしまいました。

When he woke in the middle of the night, 

夜中に目を覚まし、

he could hear some exciting sounding music being played in the distance.

楽しそうなおはやしの音のするほうへ行ってみると、

The noise was coming from a group of oni (demons) who were dancing around in a circle.

 鬼たちが輪になって歌って踊っています。 

They seemed to be having so much fun that the old man couldn’t resist joining them.

あまりにも楽しそうなので思わずおじいさんは一緒に踊り出しました。

 

The old man was a good dancer, so the demons were overjoyed.

おじいさんの踊りがうまいので、鬼たちは大喜び。

 

When dawn neared, the demons told the old man: 

やがて、朝が近づくと鬼たちは言いました。

“Come dance again after nightfall.

 「また夜になったら踊りに来いよ。

We’ll hold onto this lump until you come back.” 

それまでこのこぶを預かっておくからな」。

The old man’s face became smooth and lump-free.

 おじいさんのこぶはきれいになくなりました。

After he returned to the village, 

村へ帰ったおじいさんは、

he related the incident to another old man who also had a lump.

もう一人、同じようにこぶを持つおじいさんにこのことを話しました。

 

This other old man became envious and went into the forest that night.

うらやましくなったもう一人のおじいさんはその夜森へ出かけました。

But since he had two left feet, the demons were outraged 

でも踊りが下手なので鬼たちは怒り、

and attached the lump they had taken from the first old man onto this old man’s other cheek.

最初のおじいさんから取ったこぶを、このおじいさんのほっぺにくっつけてしまいました。
