100-Year-Old Poet in Vogue 100歳の詩人が人気


 
An anthology of poems written by Toyo Shibata , a 100-year-old poet, is currently in vogue.
100歳の詩人、柴田トヨが書いた詩集が人気だ。

Shibata began to write poetry after the age of 90 and, 
90歳を過ぎてから詩を書き始め、
to commemorate her 99th birthday, published the collection “Don’t Lose Heart” by herself.

The collection came to the attention of a publishing company and became a best-seller.
出版社の目に留まり、  ベストセラーになった。

The anthology has already been published in countries such as South Korea, Taiwan and the Netherlands, 
 これは韓国、台湾、オランダでも翻訳出版されており、
and is also due to be released in other countries, including Italy and Spain, in the future.
今後イタリアやスペインでも刊行される予定。

Many have been deeply moved by the work: “I couldn’t help crying,” wrote one reader; “I want to tell my friends about it,” wrote another.
読者からは「思わず涙がこぼれた」「友達に伝えたい」など、感動の声が寄せられた。
 
Together with Toyo’s second anthology “100 Years Old,” over two million copies have been sold.
二作目の「百歳」とあわせると200万部以上に。
 
Two poems in “100 Years Old” are about her feelings of sympathy for those living in the areas hit by the Great East Japan Earthquake.

These poems particularly struck a chord with readers.

A calendar and an audio DVD have also been released.
他にもカレンダーや朗読DVDが発売されている。
 
A photo book was published in December in response to requests from fans who wanted to see more of Toyo’s cheerful face.
12月には「トヨさんの笑顔がもっと見たい!」というファンの声に応え、写真集が出版された。

It contains scenes from her everyday life, a message in her own writing, 
日々の生活の様子や直筆のメッセージ、
a chronological table of her 100-years on the planet, 
100年の人生の年表、
and her correspondence with readers from areas hit by the disaster.
被災地などの読者との交流を伝えている。
