The Other Side of Japanese Name Cards 日本語の名刺の裏側

 

In Japan, name cards (or business cards) are indispensable and are customarily exchanged when people first meet.

日本では名刺は欠かせないもので、慣習として初対面のときに交わされます。

Therefore, many non-Japanese who stay here for an extended period have a set made.

そのため、日本に長く滞在する外国人の多くが名刺を作ります。

Non-Japanese and Japanese who conduct business internationally, usually have bilingual name cards, with English

on one side and Japanese on the other.

外国人や国際ビジネスに携わる日本人は、通常片面が英語で、もう片面が日本語の2ヵ国語の名刺を持っています。

To write non-Japanese names in Japanese, katakana characters are commonly used.

日本語で外国人の名前を書く場合、一般的にカタカナが使われます。

However, some people prefer using kanji to draw more attention.

しかし、注意をひこうと漢字を使う人もいます。

Since each kanji character has its own meaning, individuals can choose their favorites to more closely resemble the proper pronunciation of their names.

それぞれの漢字には意味があるので、各自が名前の発音に近い好みの漢字を選ぶことができます。

For instance, take America’s first president George Washington.

例えば、アメリカの初代大統領ジョージ・ワシントン。

One possible set of kanji characters means “Governing a nation with compromise and being friendly to Japan with sincerity.”

「譲歩して国を治め、誠実に日本と親しくする」の意味となる漢字を選べます（譲治和親敦）。

The kanji meaning “to compromise” is used for the president’s first name “geor” (jo), followed by “ge” (ji) for “governing.”

大統領の名前「ジョー」には「譲る」、そして「ジ」 には「治める」を意味する漢字が使われます。

“Wa” means Japan, while “shing” (shin) is friendly and “ton” sincere.

「ワ」は日本を意味する「和」、「シン」は親しいの「親」、「トン」は誠実を意味する「敦」を使います。

I have a friend named George Sheehan, who is a cheerful young American.

私にはジョージ・シーハンという陽気な若いアメリカ人の友達がいます。

He likes to joke around quite a bit and has played jokes on me many times.

彼は冗談が大好きで、何度も私をからかいました。

One day George told me that he was going to teach English from April to a young women’s group.

ある日、ジョージは4月から若い女性のグループに英語を教えると言いました。　

For his new job, I promised to present him with a set of kanji name cards.

私は新しい仕事の祝いに、漢字の名刺をプレゼントすると約束しました。

He didn’t understand kanji at all, but was so excited.

彼は漢字が全くわかりませんが、とても喜びました。

Several days later I gave him his cards, explaining that “I chose kanji characters that anyone can easily remember. Ask the girls their meaning!”

数日後、「誰でもすぐに覚えられる漢字を選んだよ。意味は彼女たちに聞いて」と言って、私は名刺を彼に渡しました。

After his first lesson he called me in a happy voice, “Each woman laughed when I handed them my name card. You are a kanji genius!”

初めてのレッスンの後、彼 からうれしそうな声で電話がありました。「名刺を渡すと、どの女性も大笑いしてくれたよ。あなたは漢字の天才だ！」。

He then continued, “But no one told me what was written, instead they said, ‘I don’t like George’ with a smile. What do they mean?”

そして彼は、こう続けました。「でも、何と書かれているのか誰も教えてくれないばかりか彼女たちは笑いながら『ジョージは好きじゃない』と言うんだ。どういう意味なの？」と。

I didn’t tell him the truth, instead saying that, “it means ‘Ignorance is Bliss.’”

私は、「知らぬが仏という意味だよ」と言い、本当のことを教えませんでした。

Actually, I picked kanji for “George” meaning “love affair” and “Sheehan” meaning “teacher.”

実際に、私が選んだ漢字は、「ジョージ」が不倫を表す「情 事」、「シーハン」が先生を表す「師範」でした（情事師範）。
