Kasajizou かさ地蔵

A long long time ago, 

むかしむかしあるところに、

there lived an old man and his wife.

おじいさんとおばあさんが住んでいました。

One New Year’s Eve, 

ある年の大晦日のこと、

in order to buy New Year’s mochi (rice cake) 

お正月のおもちを買うために、

the couple made some hats from rushes to sell in the village.

二人は町で売るかさを作りました。

The old man took all five of these sedge hats 

おじいさんは五つのかさを持って出かけましたが

but could not sell any.

一つも売れません。

As he walked home in the snow,

雪の中、おじいさんが家に帰ろうと歩いていると

he encountered six jizou (guardian stone) statues alongside the trail.

お地蔵様が六つ並んでいます。

As snow had piled up on their heads, 

その頭には雪が積もっていたので、

the old man placed hats upon all six of them, 

おじいさんは自分がかぶっていたかさも取って、

even giving away his own hat.

全部のお地蔵様にかさをかぶせてあげました。

When he got home and told his wife,

家へ帰って話すとおばあさんは

she said, “That was so generous of you.”

「それは良いことをしましたね」と言いました。

That night, voices could be heard chanting, “Where is the old man’s house?”

その夜、「じいさまの家はどこだ」という歌が聞こえてきます。

Soon, there was a thud at the door, 

そして家の前に重たいものを置く音がして、

and the song stopped.

その歌も聞こえなくなりました。

The old man and wife opened their front door 

二人が戸を開けてみると、

to find ample quantities of rice cakes and other festive dishes placed there.

そこにはおもちやごちそうがたくさん置いてありました。
