Increasing Interest in Bhutan ブータンへの関心が高まる

The King of Bhutan and his wife paid a visit to Japan in November as state guests (foreign VIPs entertained at the cost of the Japanese government). 

ブータンの国王夫妻が11月に国賓（国の費用で迎えられる外国の要人）として来日しました。

They were on their honeymoon, but they also visited areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. 

新婚旅行も兼ねていましたが、東日本大震災の被災地も訪れました。

Japanese interest in Bhutan has continued even after they returned to their country. 

夫妻が帰国した後も日本人のブータンへの関心は続いています。

Bhutan advocates GNH (Gross National Happiness) over GNP (Gross National Product) 

ブータンは「GNP（国民総生産）」より、「GNH（国民総幸福量）」が大切であると提唱しています。

and is said to be the world’s happiest country where more than 90% of the population say they are happy. 

国民の9割以上が「幸せ」と回答しており、「世界一幸せな国」といわれています。

The King’s unaffected character and the speech he gave at the Diet (parliament) made a strong impression on some Japanese.

Travel agencies and friendship associations are getting more inquiries about how to get to Bhutan and visit its tourist sites.

The number of visitors to exhibitions of Bhutanese traditional dress and artifacts has more than doubled.
