Gay Couples Living in Japan where People are Stereotyped

(Hiragana Times article edited to be more reader friendly)
Life and love could not be more international for Mitchell Armstrong and partner Kunihiro Satoh, who have been together since meeting through friends at a bar in Japan in 2005.
In the beginning they were just friends, but that soon lead to the inevitable much more, and two months after their first encounter they moved in with each other into an apartment in Tokyo.
Shortly after that they decided to go back to Sydney together for the first time to visit Mitchell’s family.
At that time Mitchell recalls he had just come out to his family and told them he was gay.
But as he says, “I was quite nervous, but they soon fell in love with him just as I had.
We had many laughs and I feel so fortunate to have such an accepting group of people who surround me.”
Homosexuality is not a Sickness
Mitchell was also lucky enough to be embraced into Kunihiro’s family, something which in Japan is less common as a lot more gay and lesbian Japanese keep their sexuality a secret from family and friends.
As Mitchell adds, “People fear what they don’t know.
A lot more people in Japan need to be educated and become aware that homosexuality is not a sickness, and certainly not a ‘lifestyle.’”
The pair has had many fun times together, and early on in their relationship took a trip to Korea.
“It was funny because we had no idea about what to do or where we were!
I think that by going somewhere totally different from what we were used to really helped us appreciate how much we meant to each other,” Mitchell reflects.
Regarding problems encountered as an international couple – and gay on top of that – Mitchell adds, “It is hard being a gay couple in Japan, let alone an international one.
The main problem in Japan is that for the Japanese, change is very hard to cope with.”
He went on to add that the problems here would be much less if there was a spousal visa for same-sex couples, but Japan is yet to pass law to recognize gay and lesbian couples.
Some Countries Recognize Same-sex Couples’
Currently marriage as defined by civil law is available to same-sex couples in five countries, with some of those countries also concurrently holding civil unions.
The Netherlands was the first country to allow same-sex marriage in 2001.
Same-sex marriages are also recognized in Belgium, Spain, Canada and South Africa.
Civil unions, a legally recognized union similar to marriage and varying in terms country to country, are currently available in 15 countries in Europe as well as New Zealand and Australia, a few countries in Central and South America, selective states in the U.S., and Israel.
Legal rights aside, Mitchell says, “We have had our share of disagreements and arguments, but at the end of the day you know that you love this person and would do anything for them.
Sometimes it is hard being a gay international couple, but we wouldn’t (and couldn’t) have it any other way.
Share every moment you have together, laugh and be happy, focus on the positive and not the negative.”
And most importantly he finishes off, “love has no boundaries.”
A great point to constantly remind ourselves of when we turn to judge others for not being exactly like us, gay, straight or otherwise.
VJ (visual artist) and fashion designer couple Anna Antoniades and Shantell Martin are another international couple in Tokyo.
The pair from England have both been living and working in their respective creative fields in Tokyo almost four years and met for the first time in September 2006 at a dance party.
After they started dating their hectic work schedules and the work-related events they each needed to attend left them little time to spend together and they lived far from one another with Shantell living in Higashi Koenji and Anna in Shirokane Takanawa.
By chance, however, they would often bump into each other on the train.
“Subconsciously” finding one another as Shantell puts it was a sign that they were “definitely meant to be together.”
One of the main difficulties the ladies noted regarding their relationship as a foreign lesbian couple living in Japan was being able to express their relationship openly as Japan has very fixed stereotypes of what a gay couple looks like and acts like, something that has made it hard for Shantell and Anna in terms of how to act together in public.
Also on the creative side, their scene here in the international community is somewhat small, making private and professional ties overlap and rendering some opportunities impossible.
They remain strong, however, and their advice for any international couple living abroad – gay or straight – is to try and eat healthily, live economically and remain tolerant and patient with one another so that when life becomes difficult the other is there for support and strength.
They note that for any gay couple living abroad the pressures found are not “specific to any one place more than another.”
They also note that “there seems to be a confusion in the expectation of a ‘couple’ within society, usually meaning: cars, house, then marriage and children.
For a gay couple things are different.
But there is a pressure when one doesn’t think like this,
because we should always fit into the modern consumer cycle.”

When I went to Britain last month I had an opportunity to speak with a young Japanese girl who came to Britain to study English.
I asked her in English, "You are staying here one year? You must be able to speak quite well now then, right?"
"I am embarrassed to be asked that."

To summarize her remarks, she could not speak English at all although she thought she would learn to speak the language if she came to Britain.

But the reality was different.

She couldn't become friendly with the family nor make British friends as a matter of course.

As she came to Britain alone, she feels lonely and wants to find useful living information, so she naturally speaks to Japanese with whom she can communicate.
There are many Japanese those like her who came from all over Japan.
After all, they gather and speak in Japanese everyday.
"I came here to study English, but I mastered the Kansai and Tohoku dialects," she laughed and continued,
"Since I have been here a year now, my family and friends believe I would be able to speak English fluently.
I can't return to Japan now, so I am extending my stay by taking part-time work."
"And then?"
"As I can't speak English, I am working at a souvenir shop for Japanese tourists.
As a result, I have mastered all the Japanese dialects instead of English."

(Hiragana Times article edited to be more reader friendly)

A Nostalgic Story of a Teacher and Students on a Small Island

Nijushi no Hitomi (Directed by Keisuke Kinoshita)
The book “Nijushi no Hitomi” (Twenty-four Eyes) by Sakae Tsuboi might be a familiar story to many Japanese, but most likely a considerably fewer number of people have seen the black and white 1954 film based on the famous story.
Just one of the 50 films directed by the prolific Keisuke Kinoshita, Twenty-four Eyes easily stands out as one of the most memorable of the late, great director.
The story centers on a vibrant, young teacher, Hisako Oishi, played by Hideko Tankamine, and starts from the very beginning of her teaching career, educating first-year students on the island of Shodoshima in the Inland Sea, Kagawa Prefecture.
Initially, the film takes place in 1928 and old, traditional values are on full display.
Miss Oishi goes against the grain by riding a bicycle on her long journey from home to school, all the while wearing a modern suit rather than a kimono, drawing the ire and gossip of the island women.
Her modern ways are more of a practical measure rather than meant as disrespect.
Miss Oishi teaches 12 students, who quickly develop a close relationship with her.
This loyalty eventually changes the attitudes of the grown ups.
Not long after, however, as the result of an innocent prank by the children, Miss Oishi injurs her leg, making it impossible to ride her bike to school, and therefore must transfer to the higher grade school near her home.
Fast forward four years when her original 12 students reach grade 5 and she once again becomes their teacher.

The reunion is sweet, but the harsh realities of life start to interfere with the children’s lives.
One girl has to quit school and work far away.

And yet another girl must give up her dream of being a singer in order to help out at her family’s restaurant.
Besides poverty, Japan’s war in Asia affects the inhabitants of the island, as the boys dream of becoming soldiers, much to the chagrin of their teacher, who’s simple desire not to see anyone killed puts her at odds with the nationalistic sentiment of the time.
Add to all of this her disenchantment with teaching, as the atmosphere of censorship and paranoia at her school slowly sap her enthusiasm, eventually leading her to resign and start a family.
By the end of the movie, 20 years have passed and we see an older Miss Oishi reunited with the remaining members of her original class.

Takamine portrays Oishi with absolute charm and grace, from her youthful exuberance to older melancholy.

(Hiragana Times article edited to be reader friendly)

Strange Experience of a Girl Lost in a Wondrous World
Spirited Away (directed by Hayao Miyazaki )
Spirited Away a big hit by director Hayao Miyazaki, a master of Japanese animation.
To date the film has been seen by over 23 million people and has made 30.4 billion yen, making it the most successful Japanese film in history.
Spirited Away is the story of a girl named Chihiro who was spirited away to a weird town where she experiences many things at a bath house where Japanese gods come to relax.
Chihiro was moving to a new home with her parents by car, but they missed their way and wandered onto a forest road.
The road came to a dead end and they got out of the car, whereupon they found a tunnel.
Passing through the tunnel a strange uninhabited town that resembled a theme park appeared.
They found their way to a restaurant where there were many different kinds of food on the counter.
Chihiro’s parents started to eat their favorite food, saying that they would pay when the staff came back.
Chihiro left the restaurant and walked around the town, and found a bath house like a castle.
As she was crossing the bridge to the bath house, a handsome boy called Haku appeared and told her not to cross.
She returned the the restaurant where she found her parents had turned into pigs.
Haku appeared again and took the confused Chihiro to the bath house.
Haku told her to tell the witch Yubaba that she wanted to work there and said this was how she could save her parents. Haku then left.
Many Japanese gods were staying as guests at the bath house, where many wondrous figures and animals were working.
Finally she was allowed to work at the bath house and was given the name “Sen” by the witch.
In the house lots of unique characters such as unwanted guests and a mysterious man called “faceless” appear.
Chihiro has many different experiences and solves difficult problems, before returning to the real world at the place where she left her parents.
Many Miyazaki works such as “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind,” “My Neighbor Totoro” and “Raputa: Castle in the Sky” have a clear message and story, but with this film viewers rate and interpret the film quite differently.
Some say Chihiro is a typical Japanese girl who is spoiled and this film teaches children important life lessons.
Certainly, it seems the film teaches children they can overcome the succession of hardships they will face in life with wisdom, bravery and love.
Some people think it expresses the selfishness and ugliness of human beings by portraying Chihiro’s parents as pigs.
This film was the first animated work to receive the Golden Bear Prize (Best Award) at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Many other awards including the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature were also given to Spirited Away.
